About Me
I am an author writing fiction and non-fiction about Chinese history.
My interest in China started at a young age. As is the case with most westerners, I was introduced to Chinese history through Koei’s Dynasty Warriors franchise, a hack and slash video game set during the famous Three Kingdoms era of the Han Dynasty. My father and I had many great times playing it together.
It was not until college that I began to take an interest in writing about Chinese history. After taking a Chinese Business class, I found that many aspects of modern Chinese culture can be explained through history. Thus, the first draft of The Little Red Book: Understanding Modern China Through Historical Analysis was born. I was honored to have my first published book win the Best Indie Book Award and finish as a finalist for the Independent Author Network’s Book of the Year Award.
I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my writing career, but I began to notice something. While academic non-fiction works are very important, I decided to try a different strategy. Many of the world’s most popular shows are deeply rooted in historical worlds. If I wrote a fictional novel with Chinese history as the backdrop, at minimum, it would be entertaining and grab the attention of western readers. Once I’ve enthralled them in the plot, they will organically learn about China’s history, accomplishing my goal.
While researching for The Little Red Book, I became quite interested in the history of the late Ming Dynasty which inspired me to write The Last Jinyiwei the first entry in The Memories of the Ming saga. I always like to say that Chinese history is like if Game of Thrones was real and happened every hundred years.
I hope that when I pass on, I will have contributed a little bit to the Western appreciation of a Chinese history.
